Clerkship Elective for fourth year COM Students

OST 685: International Clerkship Rotation (6 credits)

Dates: vary, according to students schedule

International Clerkship Rotation is designed to provide the student with an opportunity to actively engage in patient-based, learning experiences in a country outside the United States under the guidance of a clinician preceptor in collaboration, as appropriate, with interns, residents and/or fellows.

Rotations are typically four weeks, 6 credit hours in duration.

An application is required for every selective/elective rotation. Prospective independent rotation students are required to provide 30-day advance application approval.

To compare and analyze health care delivery systems between the U.S. and Cuba that results in enhanced understanding and potentially transferable practices.

It is the discretion of the Course Director to determine which students may participate. An interview may be required.

If you need guidance in finding a hospital or a supervising physician abroad, please contact IGH or schedule an appointment with IGH Study Abroad Office calling to 517-353-8992, Monday to Friday 9:00am to 4:30pm

  • Please select your dates of rotation, location (city), specialty you would like to focus, and hospital and send the information via email to the Institute for Global Health Study Abroad team.
  • Once the Institute for Global Health has pre-assess your elective request, you will receive a link to apply through OEA website.
  • Students must apply through Michigan State’s Office of Study Abroad, once the individual link for the rotation is provided by the Institute for Global Health.
  • Once the application is completed on line, the Institute for Global Health, Office of Education Abroad, Clerkship team at COM and Global Health and safety will review the application and communicate the enrollment on the course or inquiry if additional information is needed.

Notice

Timeframes for each rotation are decided at least 60 days, but preferably 90 days, prior to the beginning of the rotation. As travel requests start going back to pre-pandemic numbers, please allow extra time to review your application and reach out to IGH as soon as you have made a decision on taking this elective course
