South Korea, an East Asian nation on the southern half of the Korean Peninsula, shares one of the world’s most heavily militarized borders with North Korea. It’s equally known for its green, hilly countryside dotted with cherry trees and centuries-old Buddhist temples, plus its coastal fishing villages, tropical islands and high-tech cities such as Seoul, the capital.

Pre-Clerkship Elective for second year COM Students

OST 693: Global Health: Korean Healthcare Delivery Systems (3 credits)

Dates: Summer Break 2024 – August 03 to August 17, 2024- 2 week program

Spend nearly a week exploring Korea for an enriching cultural and medical experience. Understanding healthcare in Korea is vital dear to their rapidly emerging economy and population. Korea has tropical regions that are heavily impacted by global warming and other widespread public health issues such as smoking and IV use. This allows Korea to be a unique place to study.

  • Second year medical curriculum (COM/CHM/CON) student or MS in Global Health students (COM) at Michigan State University.
  • 2.5 GPA required.
  • Must have a good understanding of Biology, Microbiology, and Physiology.
  • Must have respect for different cultures.
  • Must demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively.

William Cunningham DO, MHA currently serves as the Associate Dean for Global Health and the Director of the Institute for Global Health (IGH) at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Cunningham was instrumental in the formation and approval of the Masters in Global Health and Certificate program that will matriculate students in January of 2020. In his current capacity of Associate Dean, he is responsible for advocating on the behalf of the four health care colleges at MSU for the education, research and cultural awareness of their graduate students. Additionally, IGH provides Study Abroad programs, such as the Dominican Republic, for pre-professional students interested in the delivery of health care in a global context.

Sung Soo Chung has worked for the Institute for Global Health since 2012. Chung has also worked for VIPP for more than 15 years and is responsible for new international higher education program development and implementation with Korea and other countries in Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and North Africa.
